JON STANBROUGH TOPS FIELD OF 65 MSCS SPRINT CARS FOR $5,000 VICTORY AT BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY
By: Chris Nunn

Bloomington, IN - September 18, 2009 - The month of September is upon us, which means cool temperatures, and the inevitable end of the racing season. Drivers are looking for places to race to quench that itch to race just one more time before the season ends. You could say that was true at Bloomington Speedway as a huge field of 65 Midwest Sprint Car Series sprint cars filled the pit area for the $5,000 to win fall spectacular. Drivers from the MSCS and USAC were in the pits, as well as independent super stars made up the roster. If there was an All-Star race, you could look at the drivers that were at the track and pick this one to be it. The O’Neal Wood Products UMP Modifieds and the Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stocks provided the remainder of the card. Jon Stanbrough of Avon, IN claimed the big payday in the MSCS Sprint Car main event, Josh Eads of Bloomington picked up the O’Neal Wood Products UMP Modified feature event, and Winston Howe of Bloomington claimed the Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stock feature.

Scotty Weir and Danny Holtsclaw made up the front row for the 30 lap, $5,000 to win main event, with Scotty Weir bouncing around in turn one. Weir’s mishap caused numerous cars to check up and ended up with a four car pile up in turn four. Chris Babcock, Holtsclaw, Josh Wise, and Jesse Cramer were the four cars involved. With Weir on the pole, Kyle Cummins took over the outside front row starting spot, the field took the green. Weir led lap one, with Cummins jumping the cushion and losing several spots. Jon Sciscoe moved to the second spot, bringing Eric Smith with him to third. Smith then moved around Sciscoe for the second spot on lap four. Behind them, Jerry Coons, Jr. had already moved to fourth, after starting 14th on the grid. The red flag flew on lap six, as Dave Darland took a wild flip down the backstretch. Weir led the field to the green on the restart, and pulled out to a six car advantage over Smith to complete lap seven. Behind them, Coons, Jr. and Sciscoe battled for third, with Sciscoe keeping the spot. Behind them, Jon Stanbrough and Bobby Stines dueled for the fifth spot. Back up front, Smith took the lead away from Weir, and pulled out to a three car length advantage on lap 11. Stanbrough moved to the second spot on lap 12, and began to set his sights on Smith just before the caution flew for Sciscoe. With Stanbrough right on his tail, Smith took the green on the lap 12 restart. Stanbrough moved around Smith coming down the backstretch and had the lead on lap 13. The caution flew on lap 14, as Weir slowed to a stop outside of turn two. On the restart, Stanbrough immediately took a seven car length advantage over Smith. Coons moved around Smith at the halfway mark to take second. Smith, Bobby East, and Bobby Stines completed the top five. The red flag flew once again on lap 16, as MSCS point’s leader Kyle Cummins flipped in turn two. On the restart, Stanbrough led Coons, Jr. to the green. Both drivers stuck to the bottom of the race track, with Stanbrough opening up a six car length lead over Coons. Coons began to close in on lap 18, to within a car length. Coons dove low under Stanbrough in an attempt to take the lead on lap 19. With ten laps to go, Coons fell back just a bit too about four car lengths behind Stanbrough. Behind them, Stines moved to the third spot, getting around Smith. Shane Cottle worked his way into the top five after starting last on the grid. With five laps to go, the gap between Stanbrough and Coons stood at three car lengths, with Coons not being able to find a line around Stanbrough. With three to go, the gap remained the same, as all Stanbrough had to do was stay clean. As the white flag flew, Stanbrough kept his line, and took the win over Coons, Stines, Cottle, and Holtsclaw completing the top five.

MSCS Sprint Car heats went to Danny Holtsclaw, Scotty Weir, Kyle Cummins, Jon Stanbrough, Eric Smith, and Josh Wise. B-Main winners were Dave Darland and Jerry Coons, Jr., Seth Parker won the C-Main

Matt Boknecht and Josh Eads made up the front row for the O’Neal Wood Products UMP Modified main event, with Boknecht leading the first lap. John DeMoss pressured Eads for the second position but couldn’t make the move. Eads then moved to the high side, and took the lead away from Boknecht on lap four. The caution flew just after, as Karlie Holt spun in turn two. Eads took the field to the green on the restart, with Boknecht second and John DeMoss third. Clint DeMoss began to pressure John for third, but John moved up to challenge Boknecht for second. John DeMoss moved to second, but was over a half a straightaway behind Eads. Behind them, Kent Robinson began to make a move towards the front, moving around Clint DeMoss for fourth, and then around Boknecht for third. Robinson then set up on the high side and shot around John DeMoss for second on lap 10. With a lapped car between Eads and Robinson at the halfway point, John DeMoss, Shelby Miles, and Boknecht completed the top five. Robinson looked as if he was beginning to close in on Eads with less than ten laps to go, as he cleared all the lapped cars between him and Eads. Both cars were running about the same groove on the race track, with Eads a tad lower. On lap 17, the gap between the two sat at less than two car lengths. On lap 19, Robinson attempted to move under Eads for the lead, but was not able to make the pass stick. The caution flew on the same lap, as Miles found himself looking the opposite direction on the front stretch. On the restart, Eads and Robinson ran door to door for the lead, with Eads holding off Robinson on lap 21. With three laps to go, Robinson shot to the outside once again, but Eads moved up to block him. With two to go, Robinson switched grooves, and moved to the low side. Robinson was not able to make the pass on Eads, and Eads held on to win his second career feature at the Bloomington Speedway over Robinson, Eads is sponsored by General Interiors, Anbro, and Bounds & McPike.

O’Neal Wood Products UMP Modified heat races went to John Passmore, Matt Boknecht, Josh Eads. John Davis won the B-Main

Gerald Todd and Troy Clark made up the front row for the 25 lap Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stock feature event with Todd leading lap one. Behind him, Winston Howe moved around Clark to take second as they completed lap one. Todd washed up the racetrack on lap two, allowing Howe to take the lead, bringing Clark with him to second. Todd fell all the way to fifth on his mishap. As the field clicked off lap six, Kevin Arthur looked under Clark for the second spot, and took the position away on lap seven. Clark battled back, and took the battle back to Arthur. Meanwhile, Howe began to pull away from the side by side running duo of Clark and Arthur. Arthur finally locked up the second position on lap nine, and began his chase towards Howe. At the halfway point of the race, Howe led Arthur, Brad Cummings, Clark, and Jeremy Hines in fifth. Cummings moved around Clark just as they took the halfway signal. With two lapped cars between him and Arthur, Howe looked to be in cruise control. Unfortunately for him, the caution flew, as the third place running car of Cummings, and the fifth place car of Hines found themselves in an accident in turn two on lap 15. On the restart, Howe took the field to the green and opened up a five car length advantage over Arthur. Chris Hillman, now running third, moved around the lapped car of Rob Paris, and began to run down Arthur for second with just five laps to go. With three to go, Howe enjoyed a comfortable advantage over Arthur, who had Hillman right on his tail. With two to go, Hillman moved to second. Howe, however, was in charge, and cruised to the win over Hillman, Arthur, Roy Bruce, Jr., and Todd. Howe is sponsored by Korniak Freezer Beef, Howe Auto Sales, Bloomington Eagles, ABC Septic Services, and Hobbs Chassis.

Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stock heats went to Winston Howe, Chris Hillman, and Kevin Arthur. Travis Todd won the B-Main
